One of the bottles I thought I’d never get to try due to the cost, it’s actually somewhat reasonable relative to other whiskies of similar style and age (or was when it was released, anyway). Fortunately for me, someone decided to split up a bottle into samples and I was able to get one.Talisker 30, Island (Skye) Single Malt, 45.8% ABV
Minutia: Unfortunately I don’t know anything about the casks used here, just that it was bottled in 2015 and made for 3912 bottles. Enjoyed neat in a glencairn.
Color: Brown Sherry, 1.9.
Nose: Fruity, apples, pears, some citrus. Hint of smoked spice. Nutty molasses/caramel.
Taste: Strong, light fruit. Berry/apple sweetness. Bit peppery.
Finish: Oaky smoke, bit of a charred sugar feel. Long.
The fruitiness caught me way off guard. I did not expect that at all from a Talisker, at least not without much smoke. I suppose the age and its typical association with diminishing presence of peat makes sense here. You wouldn’t really know this was peated until the finish, and even then most of that could be attributed to the amount of time in contact with wood. This was a real eye opener to me in how much I was able to enjoy something without much presence of peat.
Score: 94
