Talisker 25

Talisker 10 was something I learned I liked pretty early on. I haven’t had much more yet, but have heard the differences as you step up in age can be quite dramatic. I’ve been wanting to try this for a while, but couldn’t hope to afford a bottle, and fortunately a sample came up for sale.

Talisker 25, Island (Skye) Single Malt, 58.1% ABV

Minutia: Bottled at cask strength in 2007 after maturation in refill casks, a combination of ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry, resulting in 6894 bottles. Enjoyed neat in a glencairn.

Color: Russet muscat, 1.3.

Nose: General fruit, smoke, apples, salt, caramel (individually and blending together like the carnival treat), lemon cookie.

Taste: Rich, smoky. Sour fruit, spices, anise, wood.

Finish: Much wood, sausagey spice, salt.

This was really very nice, but a bit shy of absolutely spectacular. It’s certainly interesting relative to the 10, and I can see that I was definitely a bit too generous with my scoring early on, or at least with my scale. While the 10 is in the unlikely to choose something else category, it’s not 1 point less than this. At least now I can track a new statistic of what my averages were over time and see how my scores kind of progressed.

Score: 92
