Jura 18

Jura 12 didn’t wow me, but I’m still looking to give the distillery a fair shake. I’m glad I picked up Superstition and Prophecy before they dry up after Jura changed their core range, though haven’t had an opportunity to open them. I was catching up with a friend at a bar and they happened to have the 18 year available so I took the chance to order it.
Jura 18, Island (Jura) Single Malt, 44% ABV
Minutia: Matured in ex-Bourbon casks and ex-red wine casks, specifically Premier Grand Cru Classé Bordeaux barrels. Enjoyed neat in a tumbler.
Color: Deep amber.
Nose: Some burnt something, dark fruit, some smoke and oak. The burnt whatever is interesting.
Taste: A subdued version of the nose, with malt. Overall a bit sweeter.
Finish: Short, a bit sweet but nice. Bourbon influence is clear here.
It seems to me the wine casks are most obvious on the nose and still there on the palate, and the bourbon casks’ influence is most present in the finish. I enjoyed this a fair deal, more than I thought given the reputation Jura seems to have being a bit off with the spirit and compensating too much with casks and such. This is definitely a step above the rest of the core range and it seems some age and not going crazy with the casks is good for this spirit.
Score: 77
