I’ve had this for quite some time and finally decided to crack it open before I got into the Bowmore 18 that I’ve had for a similar amount of time shortly after. I liked the 12 well enough so I’m expecting to like this a bit more, but I’m also expecting to be a bit underwhelmed as I have had it before.
Minutia: Matured in ex-Bourbon and ex-Oloroso Sherry casks. Enjoyed neat in a glencairn, rested about 30 minutes.
Color: Dark ambe.
Nose: Sweet fruit, malt, subtle smoke, vanilla.
Taste: Fruity malt, specifically apple. Smoke is well behind that and comes to the forefront after a bit.
Finish: Medium-short, smoke comes in more and fades to a fruity caramel sweetness.
This was better than I expected/remembered for an OB Bowmore at a fairly low proof that’s a bit gimmicky with the darkness of the liquid and obvious excessive coloring. It is nicely balanced but the finish is wanting.
Score: 82
