Loving Port Charlotte I’m much looking forward to this style of cask as it is the first I’ve had of it. Another positive of the blind tastings to see what I get and how much I enjoy the cask type without any expectations.
Minutia: Distilled in 2007 and matured 8 years in French Oak ex-Cognac casks. Enjoyed neat in a glencairn.
Color: Russet muscat, 1.3.
Nose: Smoky, weird, wine, oak.
Taste: Musty, intense vegetation and pepper. Tannic.
Finish: The notes of the taste ramp up and then fade over a long finish.
Guess: Port Charlotte, maybe Octomore, in a wine cask.
In terms of how the cask affects the spirit, I think cognac is close enough to wine for me to consider this a pretty good guess. Port Charlotte has failed to disappoint, wine (and I guess now wine-based spirit) casks continue to do well for me, and this is no exception. I really hope Bruichladdich continues to experiment with the various finishes and such that they have been.
