I like Bowmore’s bottlings well enough, and IBs of theirs are highly praised. This was the first I bought a while ago and I’m really looking forward to trying what they make but don’t release themselves. This one was bottled by Ian MacLeod under the Chieftain’s label.
Minutia: Distilled in April 2002 and bottled in April 2016, this was matured in hogsheads numbered 815801/815810 yielding 3615 bottles. Enjoyed neat in a glencairn.
Color: Amber, .7.
Nose: Very light, slight apple. You’d hardly know you were nosing a spirit.
Taste: Light, easy. Slight malt. Apple, some heat.
Finish: Earthiness, some smoke, peppery. Medium.
Guess: Bowmore or a Laddie, but off from their norm.
This is light, and nice, but simple. I think in this instance the blind aspect hurt it a bit, at least in the sense that there was no consideration for the place this has. The lightness was nice, but I rated it somewhat lowly because the lack of punch and complexity. However, if you are looking for something breezy for a day in the sun or something, it’s a home run. After the reveal, what I was interpreting as vague apple now seems more floral, but not in the bad perfumey way.
Score: 76
