About time a non-Islay/Island dram pops up. I’m quite excited for this one as the standard 15 is one of my absolute favorite, and I suppose it’s a bit of a preview for what is going to be this year’s birth year bottle (a Springbank 12 from a rum cask).
Springbank 15 Rum Wood, Campbeltown Single Malt, 51% ABV
Minutia: Distilled in December 2003 and matured for 15 years in run barrels before bottling on August 27, 2019. Reviewed blind, neat in an opaque glencairn.
Color: Deep gold; 0.8.
Nose: Musty, fruity, nuts & spices, cinnamon, citric, tropical fruit. Caramel, vanilla.
Taste: Nutty, malty, dried fruits, a little beerish. Yeast and spice.
Finish: Tea/leather. Minty feeling on breath, grape soda briefly somehow? Medium-long to long.
Guess: Some special Bruichladdich, maybe a very old Bunnahabhain.
Ah, another guess where the reveal puts a lot of things into place. It really felt a lot like a Laddie on the palate, I was thinking maybe Black Art. The hoppy notes spoke of a possibility of old bourbon-aged Bunnahabhain, but it didn’t feel much like that. I flirted with guessing Fire & Cane (again) but it felt like I’d be guessing that forever until I hit, and also it didn’t really feel smoky enough for what I expect from that. In hindsight, this feels very much like a whisky with a touch of peat and fruity elements. Not sure where that grape came from, though. Tasty, but nowhere near worth secondary prices.
Score: 82
