A chance to try the discontinued 18 year old. It’s hard to find now, if you can at all, and looks pretty pricy. I just picked up a couple bottles of the 16, which is ostensibly the replacement of this, so after this I’ll need to open that and see how they stack up.Laphroaig 18, Islay Single Malt, 48% ABV
Minutia: Matured for 18 years in ex-Bourbon casks. Reviewed blind, neat in a glencairn.
Color: Russet Muscat, 1.3.
Nose: Smoky, medicinal lean.
Taste: Smoky, warm, earthy, bit of fruit.
Finish: Smoky, earthy, more than in the taste. Long.
Guess: A Laphroaig OB, maybe the 1815. Though I wouldn’t be surprised if it were a Kildalton Elements of Islay release.
A decidedly good dram. Seems like a weird line to discontinue. Hopefully the 16 can match, from what I’ve read thus far it’s a solid one as well. This one feels like an evolution. It starts somehere, gets a bit more complex, then gets a bit more intense. A very nice flow.
Score: 88
Musical Evocation: Katherine Jenkins – “In the Bleak Midwinter”
