I love wine casks, so I’m really hoping this is a winner. I think an age statement would have been nice, but that would probably put this into an entirely different price tier.
Bunnahabhain Eirigh Na Greine, Islay Single Malt, 46.3% ABV
Minutia: Matured exclusively in French red wine casks according to the website, but I’ve seen Italian mentioned as well, Reviewed blind, neat in a glencairn.
Color: Russet muscat, 1.3.
Nose: Nutty, malt, honey.
Taste: Malt, honey, pepper, wood.
Finish: Malt, honey, pepper. Chocolatey malt eventually. Medium.
Guess: Bunnahabhain. Maaaaybe a Bruichladdich.
This was super obvious right from the nose. Classic Bunnahabhain characteristics. If I waited until that chocolate quality kicked in to make my guess I’d be sure it was Bunnahabhain. I have been finding that note in much older Bunnahabhains, but maybe it’s just a characteristic of them I missed a few times early on. While it lacks the smoke that mostly appeals to me, it’s a pretty nice dram.
Score: 79
