I was shopping Total Wine’s selection a while ago and obviously am keen on finding something worth drinking for not a lot of money. I went for an Islay single malt and they had and saw some Islay and Island blended malts that were priced low and figured it was at least worth a try (Island version review coming soon). So, is it?Hamiltons Islay, Islay Blended Malt, 40% ABV
Minutia: A blended malt from distilleries on Islay. Enjoyed neat in a glencairn.
Color: Russet muscat, 1.3.
Nose: Maritime smoke, a kind of thin/weak feel to it.
Taste: Very light, a trace of smoke, some pepper later but not very present.
Finish: Peat and a ramped up pepper from the taste to where it reaches a satisfying level. There’s a hint of an “off” taste.
As you’d expect from something on the very cheap side, this isn’t anything special. I had a bit of anticipation for it when I initially purchased it at the prospect of an enjoyable, cheap bottle, but after opening it was not very happy about it. It did grow on me as I worked through the bottle at various get-togethers. It still doesn’t quite satisfy when focusing on the whisky, but when it’s just something you’re having (particularly after having had one or two more satisfying drams) it does quite well for its price point.
Score: 73
SMWS Name: Islay have another, like, an other one
