Wrapping up my dry week with the last review I have typed up, perfect timing for diving right back in. Now, Bunnahabhain hasn’t been a favorite of mine. I’ve appreciated it for what it is and recognize the quality of the spirit, but my preference for peat held back the 12 and 18 a bit for me. A 28 year old IB was very good, but the standard stuff needed that smoke for me to wholly appreciate it. When I learned Bunnahabhain had a line of peated whiskies recently, I was very eager to try them and this is the first of them for me.Bunnahabhain Toiteach, Islay Single Malt, 46% ABV
Minutia: No cask info, I read it was comprised of whisky mostly 10-12 years old, but I don’t know how reliable Distiller is; formally there is no age statement. This was enjoyed neat in a glencairn.
Color: Burnished, 1.1.
Nose: Peat. Very specifically barbecue sauce aroma. Aromatic wood.
Taste: Light smoke, warms into pepper. Really punchy, meaty, smoky flavor develops after a short time in the glass to the benefit of an already enjoyable taste.
Finish: Pleasant smoked flavor, medium-long.
This was very nice, I loved the peat here, don’t know why Bunnahabhain doesn’t do it more, and am glad they have some in their regular range. I’m glad I bought a bottle of the follow up to this rather than a sample, if it’s even close to this I’m going to love it. There’s the incredibly savory feel throughout the whole dram that gets much more pronounced in short order. I enjoyed it quite a bit a first, wrote my notes down, then on the sip after that it was almost like a different whisky in how much the intensity ramped up.
Score: 90
SMWS Name: Finally, The Peat…has come back…to Bunnahabhain
