If I’m not drinking whisky (most often Scotch), I’m drinking cider. It’s upsetting they can’t use this finish in Scotland, and I’m hoping to one day try the Virginia single malt finished in a cider cask, and when I learned about this I was fairly excited. Generally the Irish whiskey I drink is from Connemara because I like peat, but I was very curious about this finish, and now that this is available at Total Wine, and quite affordable, it was a no brainer.
Minutia: Matured in ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks, finished in ex-cider casks which held bourbon before the cider. Uses a blend of pot still, malt, and grain whiskies. Enjoyed neat in a glencairn.
Color: Gold.
Nose: Light, sweet apple/applesauce without spice, green wood, floral.
Taste: Caramel apple, malt.
Finish: Apple candy, malt.
This exceeded my expectations. I figured it would be ok, but I quite liked it. It is super light, but is tasty and unique. I am more curious than ever to try other cider cask finishes as distilleries experiment with this and would be interested in this at a higher proof. When I go to parties/barbecues/etc. I bring along a few bottles of whisky as my drink for the day and to have plenty to share, and this went over very well with other people.

Just a note of caution regarding listings of Irish Distilleries.
ReplyDeleteTullamore built a new distillery in the town in 2014 after the original one built in 1829 closed in the 1950's.
The Tullamore DEW brand mainly rose to becoming the 2nd best selling Irish Whiskey after that closure & used whiskey sourced from other Irish Whiskey distilleries to fuel that success.
Now whiskey made in Tullamore is mature enough it will be making it's way into the brands products but there will be no way of knowing as there has been a seem-less change from the previous sourced whiskey to that made in Tullamore.
The bottle you reviewed happens to be a blend & therefore can be an amalgamation of numerous whiskey from a variety of sources.
Listing by distillery implies you know where the whiskey comes from - which in this instance is not knowable.
It might be a minor point - but for some it does make a difference.
