Johnnie Walker Blue Label

In February 2019 a friend and I decided to do the first of several tastings of a handful of whiskies we each had. The second Scotch of the bunch (fourth overall) was his Blue Label. I very much enjoy the Green Label, but haven’t had a chance to try the Blue, at least not in a decade if I happened to have some way back. This was enjoyed neat on February 24, 2019 at a buddy’s house.
Johnnie Walker Blue Label, Scotland Blended, 40% ABV
Color: Gold.
Nose: Citrus, malt, grain (less than the malt), ethanol (not overly so, but surprising given the low ABV).
Taste: The malt was prevalent, and the low ABV gave this a very smooth flavor. Maybe a bit fruity and herbal, but complimentary to the malt rather than alongside it. It was a bit peaty and salty. It was a little woody and smoky but more like the morning after a fire going out rather than while burning or immediately after extinguishing.
Finish: Pleasant, a smokier version of the palate.
I was to glad to have had the opportunity to try this in a critical capacity without having to pay the premium. There is nothing bad about this; I would get more value out of 2 or 3 bottles of a different whisky for the price, but I can easily see someone getting as much out of this as they would several bottles of cheaper whiskies. That said, I learned that this is not really a whisky you would want to go for on a regular basis given the cost, but giving it as a gift or ordering it for/with a client, etc., will have some prestige with it conveying some element of importance, and in a scenario like that, it serves its role very well.
Score: 82
