I don’t quite know why, but I was super excited to try this one. I was a few glasses into the bottle of Bunnahabhain 12 I bought and wanted a change, specifically to a whisky with more of an Islay character. I don’t fully dislike the Bunnahabhain, but I’m not over the moon for it either. This one was much more my speed. I was very much looking forward to working my way through this bottle.
Minutia: Aged in ex-bourbon barrels. Enjoyed neat in a glencairn during the NHL playoffs, rested about 10 minutes.
Color: Gold.
Nose: Light and crisp. Citrus, smoke, and medicine.
Taste: Peppery Laphroaig at first, kind of like a gentler but more punchy Talisker. There’s malt, some sweetness, qualities similar to the nose but smokier, the citrus isn’t quite there. Fruity notes were brought out when smoking Irish Flake tobacco alongside it.
Finish: Pretty long, peat, smoke, burnt wood.
This doesn’t knock my socks off, but I enjoy it well enough. It was nice as a drink for the evening and I didn’t feel like I was waiting to be done with it. I’d be less impressed if it were more expensive, but at its price point it does a good job though there are better options right around that point.
Score: 80
