A decently age-stated dram from a distillery with a great record, I’ve been looking forward to this for a good while. Don’t really have much more to say before getting into it.
Minutia: Matured in ex-Bourbon casks. Enjoyed neat in a glencairn.
Color: Tawny, 1.4.
Nose: Sherry at first. Very bourbon with sweetness, maple, and oak. Malt behind all of that.
Taste: A fruity burst. Pepper afterward which rises while in the mouth.
Finish: Malty, as the pepper from the taste fades out. The malt lingers beyond the length of the pepper. Medium length while the flavors are intense, the malty remnant pushes to medium-long to long territory, but it very subtle at that point.
Guess: The Laddie 16 or something with a Sherry finish but primarily Bourbon maturation.
This felt like a Bruichladdich pretty early. I guessed the 16 specifically because I was expecting Bruichladdich’s typical 50% ABV and this hit a bit lighter than that. The reveal being 46% makes sense. The non-brash character suggested this had some decent age to it. I am a bit surprised there was no Sherry at all given the dark fruit in the nose and the fruity bust on the initial tongue contact. That said, a pure ex-Bourbon maturation makes sense because the nose could be simplified as a malted bourbon. This would be a superb summertime dram.
Score: 81
